Listening: Very proper English.

Listen to a few minutes of this, and tell me what you think.
It's a BBC interview made in 1964 where everyone speaks very slowly and correctly, in accents that would be considered too upper-class today. The interviewee is a leading scientist of his day.

Oral Project form. Return by Mon 13.4.15

Hello, everyone. Here's the Oral Project form I handed out in class today. I think it's pretty self-explanatory, but to summarise, you should form groups, agree on a project, and decide how you want to organise it. Each group should fill out a copy of the form for me by Monday 13th, and each member of the group should have the same information on their own form.
Enjoy your break.

Naomi Klein environmental video.

Naomi Klein spoke to a packed house in Bellas Artes last night, to present her latest book, on the topic of climate change, This changes everything.
Here's an interesting, if challenging, video she's made on climate change which I hope you will enjoy. Most of the participants speak slowly and clearly.

Some terms you may not be familiar with are:

Tar sands = sand from which Canada is extracting oil.
First nation = Native canadian indians.

Happy viewing.

Having read so many interesting essays in your progress test on the subject of women's rights, (and not only from the women in class), I think you'll be interested in this.
The women interviewed are turkish, bilingual, and academics, so they speak better and clearer English than most english, (or irish), people.

Linking Vowel to Vowel

When one word ends with a vowel sound and the next word begins with a vowel sound, we link the words with a sort of W or Y sound.

If our lips are round at the end of the first word, we insert a W sound:

oo
|
o
We write it like this:too oftenwho isso Ido all
We say it like this:tooWoftenwhoWissoWIdoWall

If our lips are wide at the end of the first word, we insert a Y sound:
